Icon Painting Courses

and Workshops

with matushka Marchela and father Nedyalko

Matushka Marchela Dimitrova works in the traditional Byzantine style and uses traditional Byzantine techniques painting in egg tempera and using 24 carat gold leaf. She is based in Plovdiv in Bulgaria and leads tuition with assistance of her husband father Nedyalko who is Eastern Orthodox Priest.

They both organise one week-long icon painting courses and workshops for small groups of students. The students live and work in m. Marchela's icon studio in the town of Perushtica [12 miles off Plovdiv at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains] where full board is provided [including transfers from and to Plovdiv Airport].

The courses [both beginners and advansed students are welcome] include intensive icon painting [minimum of 30 hours in 5 days and the students normally complete one icon] and 2 one-day journeys. The first one is to Plovdiv for visiting The Icon Gallery and some painted Eastern Orthodox churches there and the second one is for exploring the frescoed churches in Asenovgrad and Bachkovo monastery.

Icon painting classes and workshops are also available during the period of Alde Valley Spring Festival in Great Glemham, Saxmundham, Suffolk, the UK with artist in residence m. Marchela Dimitrova.
